FAQs

Q.
What is Hypnosis like?

You may think that you have never been hypnotised before but have you ever caught yourself daydreaming at work or completely lost in a book?  Well this kind of focused attention is a naturally occurring form of hypnosis. The only difference between that and clinical hypnosis is that with the latter you have chosen to be hypnotised.

Q.
Some people think that when you are hypnotised it is like being asleep

This is not true however you are usually generally relaxed (although this is not always the case and is just a lovely 'side-effect' of hypnosis) but you are fully aware of your surroundings, and what is being said to you.

Q.
I don’t want someone to be in control of me

Nor do I! When in hypnosis you remain in complete control at all times, because it is you who is 'doing' hypnosis, I'm just helping. When hypnotised, you will reject any suggestions given if they conflict with your values or beliefs. Similarly, you will not say anything in hypnosis that you would not normally wish to reveal.
So you won’t be doing chicken impressions – unless you want to of course!

Q.
What if I can’t be hypnotised?

There is a small element of the population who can’t be hypnotised however hypnosis is a skill that can be learned. What I need is for you to trust in me; have confidence in yourself and in the hypnotic process; have a positive attitude to hypnosis; be motivated to achieve your goals; have realistic expectations; and be aware that this is a collaborative ‘team effort’ between us.

Q.
What if I get trapped in hypnosis?

No-one has ever been ‘trapped’ in hypnosis. You are able to come out of hypnosis at any time you like should you so wish. If there is an emergency, you will be fully able to exit hypnosis unaided and deal with the situation at hand. If people could get trapped, we would soon know about it and it would be all over social media.

Q.
I’m nervous about being hypnotised

This is not unusual when you are experiencing something for the first time. You may also be feeling apprehensive as someone may have made fun of you for turning to a hypnotherapist. However what they think doesn’t matter but what you think does. Your hypnotherapist should be able to allay any fears you might have.

Q.
How do you work?

Whilst I need to have some history of the matter we are dealing with, I do not feel the need to rake over old issues in too much detail – rather we focus on what is happening now, how we can help you deal with that, and get you to where you want to be. Prior to the first session I ask you to complete and return a questionnaire. This saves time at the first appointment and allows me to prepare for the session. It is important for you to know that we work collaboratively as a team and I will expect you undertake any therapeutic tasks, such as listening to recordings or completing a diary, to complement the work we do together.

Q.
How long will the process take?

Each client is as individual as each case so it is impossible to put a definitive time frame on any treatment. After an initial appointment, I prepare a treatment plan that is tailor-made for your individual needs. Some people may require more sessions than others however, having said that, most issues can be dealt with within 4-6 sessions. Each session lasts 1-1.5hrs.

Q.
Do you offer any discounts?

I do not offer any discounts as such, however I do offer various packages which include a reduced rate, such as my 4 & 6 block session packages; smoking, weight loss, and IBS packages.

Q.
can i claim your fees through my insurance policy?

Many personal and business health policies and plans do cover hypnotherapy sessions, if the therapist has certain qualifications/accreditations. I am a GHR (General Hypnotherapy Register) Senior Practitioner and have numerous qualifications that are a prerequisite to claiming my fees. Best practice would be to check with your policy holder first. If you need further information from me, just let me know.

Q.
Where do the sessions take place?

I have a lovely therapy room in a beautiful old manor house set in wonderful gardens. If you are driving there is free parking at the venue, and is just a short drive from Basingstoke town centre. Alternatively, sessions can be undertaken via Zoom.

Q.
do I have to visit you in your office?

As I have said above, I have a lovely therapy room in a beautiful old manor house set in wonderful gardens, but sessions can also be undertaken via Zoom. I regularly 'see' clients from all over the world.

Q.
What qualifications do you have?

I have Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy having trained with Adam Eason at the Anglo-European College of Therapeutic Hypnosis in Bournemouth. I also have a Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), am an NLP Practitioner, and am a certified Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist. As well as all of those, I am a qualified Hypnotherapy Supervisor and Mental Health First Aider. I started my business in 2010 and have been a full-time hypnotherapist since 2013 so I have a lot of experience. See my About Me page for more information.

Q.

Q.
What can't be helped with hypnotherapy?

It is not always 'what' but 'who' can't be helped with hypnotherapy. Individuals suffering from dementia , who have psychotic disorders, very young children, drug addicts, anybody evidently under the influence of alcohol, ‘Educationally challenged’ individuals or anybody with comprehension difficulties are usually contraindicated for hypnosis for reason that in all cases there is the inability to properly interact and establish effective rapport. Additionally, people who suffer from asthma, epilepsy or narcolepsy may also be contraindicated, as deep relaxation can exacerbate the condition, however I have worked with clients who have asthma and epilepsy in certain situations. It is always best to just ask me if you have any concerns.

Q.
should i learn self-hypnosis??

Hypnosis is a powerful life skill for the modern person. There is a great deal of stress to be handled in today's work environment, schools, and society in general. Self-hypnosis, at the most basic level, is wonderful for de-stressing, calming, and restoring a healthful energy to your body. It gives a sense of control and connectedness to your mind and body that supports confidence and success. After becoming more skilled in self-hypnosis, you'll find that it can help you maintain motivation and peak performance, as well as health and vigour. It can help you make clear decisions. It is incredibly powerful to be able to discover what your beliefs and patterns are and be able to change them at will.  Cope with almost any problem. Remain more calm and centred in day to day life. You can design your patterns and beliefs to propel you to your highest goals and to your vision of success.

Q.
Do you offer a free consulatation?

Potential clients have the opportunity to pop in for a FREE no obligation chat. This gives you the opportunity to meet me, see where I work, and ask any questions you might have. Alternatively you can arrange a chat on the phone or via zoom. If I can help you I will let you know...if I can't help, I will also let you know. There is no hard sell or obligation to sign up to any sessions as I firmly believe that it is up to you to decide if and when you want to come and see me. If you book in, that is fine...if you don't, that is fine too!

Q.
Do I need to be referred by my doctor?

Unfortunately hypnotherapy is not funded by the NHS and so no doctor's referral is required. There are, however, some issues that need a medical diagnosis before I will agree to help you, such as IBS, as the symptoms are often similar to more serious issues that require more specialised treatment.
