Life moves fast. Between work, family commitments, responsibilities, and the never-ending to-do lists, it’s easy to find ourselves running on autopilot. For those of us in caring professions—like hypnotherapy—this can be especially true. We spend so much time giving to others that we often forget to give back to ourselves.
After a particularly busy few months working with clients and organising the Basingstoke Revive+Thrive Show, I found myself in exactly that place: grateful, fulfilled, but mentally and emotionally drained. The show was a fantastic event—bringing together wellbeing practitioners, speakers, and the local community—but as anyone who's planned something similar will know, it takes a lot out of you.
After the previous show last year, I took a little mental dip as I don’t think my mind knew what to think about…then on the Friday my uncle passed away so I didn’t have any proper time for self-care.
So, this time, I took my own advice.
I booked some time away and headed to Majorca with Gary.
Why Time Out Is Essential for Mental Health
Taking time out isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. Stepping away from our routines, even just for a day, can help reset the nervous system, reduce stress, and offer fresh perspective. Here’s why it matters:
1. Mental Clarity
When we’re constantly on the go, our thoughts become cluttered. It’s like having too many tabs open in your brain. A change of scenery—even if it’s just a walk in nature or a weekend away—helps clear mental fog and bring clarity.
2. Stress Recovery
Chronic stress can creep up on us. Time out allows the body to switch from 'fight or flight' into 'rest and repair' mode. That’s when true healing—mentally and physically—can happen.
3. Reconnection
Getting away gives us the chance to reconnect—with ourselves, with nature, or with the people we love. In Majorca, I found moments of stillness that reminded me why I do what I do: to help others find peace, but also to protect my own.
4. Perspective
Sometimes stepping out of your environment allows you to see your life from a wider lens. It's easy to get stuck in patterns, routines, or worries that feel huge—until you're sitting on a beach or in a quiet café and realise how small they really are.
A Gentle Reminder to You
Whether you’re a therapist, a parent, a business owner, or someone who gives their all to others—you need space too. You don’t have to go abroad (though I highly recommend Majorca if you can especially as it’s a short flight away!). It could be a day without screens, a solo walk in the woods, or a weekend away with friends. Whatever it looks like for you, make time for it. Protect it.
As I came back from my trip, I felt lighter, more present, and more inspired to continue my work. Not because I pushed through, but because I paused.
So here’s your permission slip to take a break. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you for it.
